Fun Facts
-
After the first Lord of the Rings movies Hobbiton was deconstructed, then re-built for The Hobbit movies. After that it was decided that it would stay.
-
When I went I was lucky enough to go inside a Hobbit hole as they had just decorated and opened 2 for the first time! It was such a treat, there were so many details, down to recipes in a cookbook!
-
In 1998, while doing reconnaissance for where Hobbiton could be, a sheep farm was spotted. It had many features of Tolkien's Hobbiton and Peter Jackson felt it was picked by Tolkien himself.
-
The New Zealand army assisted with road construction to get to the site on which were then built 39 hobbit holes, the Green Dragon pub and the mill.
-
Russell Alexander, whose family owns the farm, still runs it as both a working sheep farm and Hobbiton tours. The family originally thought the film crew just wanted “a bit of farmland”—they had no idea it would become a global landmark.
